Album Cover Design

Off

When Elliot Johnston contacted me for a Tone-Farm side project I was very excited to hear that he was looking for a new album cover design. Working with bands and musicians is one of my favorite type of projects. I really enjoy when a client has a certain set of emotions or feelings they want to come across with their project.

What they needed, and how it was accomplished:

In this case, Anything Hot (the band) wanted to evoke something creepy but not to0 scary and hinting at vampires but nothing too direct. The solution I came up with was what I imagine the bloodstream looks like when its infected with a vampire bite. This was accomplished using a couple drops of ink into a glass of water and using photoshop to blend it into a macabre backdrop. Finally I wanted to find a font that looked sharp, but classy. The last thing I wanted was for the album to come off like Edward from Twilight. Much better to go with dangerous and sophisticated. Here is the final design:

The latest single from Anything Hot melds intricate guitar riffs and soaring harmonies without losing any edge. You can listen to it here.

Here are a few of the discarded concepts.

I had the right ink, it’s thicker and more menacing. I liked the font for its elegance, but it was too soft for what we were going for.

The final discarded piece was one of the first concepts. I took the ideas from the black inkblot, but without the creepy background it just wasn’t accomplishing the mood we were going for. This may have worked out for a tv show spot, but not for this album cover.
